PsychANP Fellowship Certification

We will be accepting our next round of applications for PsychANP Fellowship Certification in March 2026!

As a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Psychiatry (FABNPsych), you will be identified as a qualified expert in the field of naturopathic psychiatry, and you will have opportunities for leadership in the naturopathic mental health community. PsychANP fellowship certification aligns with what other naturopathic specialty groups have created but is distinct to the specialty of mental health. 


Completion of the application and submission of necessary documents are due by March 30, 2026. 

Overview of the application process: 

    Requirements for Application:
  • Graduation from an accredited naturopathic medical program and passing the NPLEX exam.
  • Proof of licensure (copy of license) and good standing with any state that regulates NDs, as acknowledged by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (https://naturopathic.org/page/RegulatedStates).
  • Have sufficient clinical experience (explained below)
    Steps for Application:
  • Fill out the initial form and pay the application fee of $300 to start the process. 
  • You will then receive a welcome email with a link to a HIPAA-compliant Google Drive folder. This folder will include your application form. You will use this folder to upload all necessary documents for the application process. 
  • Write your cases (explained below) and upload them to your Google Drive folder
  • Complete your CME and upload certificates of completion (explained below) by the time the exam is proctored (estimated Sept/Oct 2026)
 

Continuing Medical Education Requirements

  • Mental health related CEs must be completed within 5 years prior to starting the application until the applicant takes the exam. Acceptable CE’s are those approved by AANP, NANCEAC, ACCME/AMA Category I only, with the exception for “Psychotherapy and Counseling” where acceptable CE’s are those that have been approved for licensed therapists in the applicant’s state of licensure. For example, if you are licensed in Washington State, acceptable CE providers include the American Psychological Association, National Board for Certified Counselors, Washington Mental Health Counselors Association and others approved for psychotherapists or counselors in your state of ND licensure.
  • Completion of 62 CE’s that are the foundation of safe general psychiatric practice. The CE requirements are due by the time of the exam.
    • 6 CE’s for Suicide Prevention, Assessment and Intervention
    • 6 CE’s for Psychiatric Emergencies (should over at least these: suicidality, agitated/homicidal patient, substance-related emergency-delirium tremens, opiate overdose, NMS/Acute Dystonia, Serotonin Syndrome, Hypertensive Crisis/Tyramine Reaction, Lithium Toxicity, TCA/anticholinergic toxicity, Delirium/Psychosis/Altered mental status presentation)
    • 5 CE’s related to Psychotherapy or Counseling (examples: Motivational Interviewing, CBT)
    • 20 total CE’s related to Psychopharmacology (examples Psychopharmacology related to depression and anxiety, psychopharmacology related to bipolar and psychotic disorders, psychopharmacology related to substance use disorder and addiction, psychopharmacology related to neurocognitive disorders such ADHD or dementia)
    • 25 total CE’s related to General Psychiatry or Mental Health with 2 CE required for Domestic Violence and abuse, and 2 CE for Ethics
      • Assessment and management of psychiatric disorders
      • Mood disorders
      • Psychotic disorders
      • Substance Use Disorders
      • Eating Disorders
      • Neurocognitive Disorders
      • Mental health in special populations (older adults, postpartum, perinatal, BIPOC, LGBTQIA community)
      • Mental Health in Pediatrics
      • Pain and management of pain
      • Trauma informed care
    • If there is doubt if a CE can count for General Psychiatry or Mental Health, the applicant should be able to cite the inclusion of the topic or chapter in a widely accepted textbook such as Saddock or Maudsley.
    • Ethics that is relevant to mental health practice, public mental health, health equality, cultural competence or similar (2 CE required)
    • Domestic violence and Abuse (2 CE required) Examples: Free CME on Child Abuse, Domestic and Family Violence, Interpersonal Violence

 

Case Write-Ups

  • Four (4) written case studies to demonstrate clinical proficiency and decision making. 
  • Case studies must follow HIPAA regulations and be de-identified per Department of Health and Human Services website. Additional details on case study requirements are listed on p. 7 of application form. See separate PDF for Case Rubrics.  

 

Evidence of Naturopathic Psychiatric/Mental Health Practice

  • Minimum of three years of psychiatric/mental health-focused clinical practice 2,000 patient/client contacts (each visit with the same patient is counted as one contact, i.e. one patient who has had six visits = six contacts). 

 

Contribution to the Field (not required)

Though it is not required, we highly encourage this contribution. Please submit a short resume so we can know what you have contributed

  • Evidence of contribution to the naturopathic mental health field
  • Teaching a mental health class at an ND college or residency program
  • Being a preceptor
  • Authorship of papers/textbooks
  • Presentation of CE to a professional audience
  • Volunteer work
